Sondhi: Mastermind lives abroad

People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) leader Sondhi Limthongkul says he believes the mastermind of the attempt to murder him on April 17 is living abroad.

"I believe the people who plotted against me might involve Department of Special Investigation and military officials, while the person who funded the attempted murder is living outside the country," Mr Sondhi said on Wednesday.

According to the yellow-shirt leader, a DSI official was a close associate of the person living abroad and this official was tapping into the phones of other government officials, to prevent the Justice Ministry from making changes within the DSI.

Mr Sondhi said he believed in deputy national police chief Gen Thanee Somboonsap's ability to investigate the ambush.

"Pol Gen Thanee is a brave cop and is ready to take on any powerful figures. Other police should look to him as an example," he said.

The PAD leader said he would attend the press conference on Friday when Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban plan to announce whether national police chief Gen Patcharawat Wongsuwon will be dismissed.

Mr Sondhi said he would be present as a member of the press.

"I don't need to have a personal meeting with the prime minister, but I would like him to run the country by rule of law, not just talking day by day," he said.

PAD coordinator and New Politics party secretary-general Suriyasai Katasila said police may arrest only scapegoats in the Sondhi shooting case.

He called on the prime minister to reexamine the roles of Mr Suthep and Pol Gen Patcharawat and to explain how the case will proceed to the public.
